Freelancing, also called as solopreneurship is a form of service, wherein we don't work for a company but, work independently in a contract-based project with our clients.

With the onset of gig-economy, freelancing finds more relevance in the modern day scenario and with lot of professionals wanting to start extra source of income apart from their full-time job, freelancing helps in overcoming this goal with least risk.


How to start a freelancing business


  1. Find a favorable niche: Find a niche which has a large market demand as well as that which captures your interest. Be sure, that your interest is not saturated in the market and it still has lot of takers. Try to acquire new skills in the niche of your interest so that, you stay afloat with the demands in the market.

  2. Identify target clients: Once you choose your niche, identify your target clients. You must understand that not all the businesses will be suitable to approach. Therefore, it is important that you approach the prospect with the requirements for your offerings. We can find out the fitment with the prospective clients using following ways:

  • Look for the businesses that need your services or are interested in them

  • Look for the businesses that can pay you right

  • Understand the future scope of the prospective business clients and your path to growth with it

  • Realize the value addition of the prospective clients and how will it benefit your business

3. Build a relevant portfolio website: Build a website that classifies your offerings. Creating a highly impressionable website is a mark of committed business and creates a favorable understanding on the clients' mind that you are targeting. For a website to capture clients' attention, it must have following things:

  • Your services and market offerings

  • Your contact information and personality insights

  • Testimonials of previous clients to increase the trust factor

  • Updating your website with new projects and work of your clients

4. Learn to pitch for your business: It is very important that you keep your sales pitch ready and communicate it in accordance to your business. The pitch should convey your value to the clients in a way that the client finds your offering as his/her business's want. 5. Contract signing before working: Before starting a freelancing project, make sure you have a proper contract which has detailed information of terms and conditions of your business. 6. Concrete pricing and payment structure: Last but not least, have a concrete payment structure so that the payment is not delayed. Also, it is advisable that the pricing is not altered much for every other project that you get keeping in mind the consistency so that, after repeated alteration the pricing does not get diluted.
